Why Should You Clean Your Crawl Space?

Homeowners will generally not enter their crawl space regularly, and many do not use it for storage. However, what happens in the crawl space will still have an important impact on the daily life of those living within the home.

In a vented crawl space, about 40% of the air in your home is coming from this space. Anything contained in that air, including doors, humidity, mold spores, and dust mite waste -- is being brought up from your crawl space and into the home.

By cleaning your crawl space, you can eliminate this significant source of allergens on your home, creating a cleaner, healthier living space.

Is There A Mess In Your Home's Crawl Space?

When it comes to mold, rot, and debris in crawl spaces, Basement Systems has seen it all. We've cleaned it all too! Here's just a few snapshots of the crawl spaces we've cleaned:

What Crawl Space Insulation Is Most Effective?

Crawl space insulation, when installed properly, is a great energy efficiency upgrade for your home. Basement Systems recommends insulating and sealing the crawl space to maximize the return on your investment. By sealing your crawl space, you will prevent air leaks and protect your crawl space (and insulation) from moisture issues.

A study from Advanced Energy has concluded that sealing a crawl space creates a much drier space, reducing the conditions needed to support the growth and reproduction of mold, wood decay, and pests. A sealed crawl space will also reduce space conditioning energy use by 15-18% annually.

And that's just what you save by sealing the crawl space! Once you factor in what you'd save by insulating the crawl space as well, you're saving some serious money on your utility bills!

A dead mouse that had nested in fiberglass insulation in a crawl space. The fiberglass is covered in its droppings.

Fiberglass insulation is soft and warm, and rodents love to build their nests in it year-round.

Once rodents have established themselves in your crawl space, they will live, breed, create waste, and die in the space. This means significant odors -- first in your crawl space, and then in your home.

As the structural wood begins to rot, other pests will also be attracted tot he space, including termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles.

Insulating Crawl Spaces With Fiberglass?

Fiberglass insulation is a open-celled material that can soak up humidity and water like a sponge. Eventually, it will become waterlogged, causing it to sag off the floor joists and fall to the floor.

Fiberglass also becomes an ideal home for rodents of all types. The insulation becomes a warm, comfortable spot for them to nest, and the moldy, damp environment will provide them with all the food they need to survive.

Crawl Space Insulation That Works

At Basement Systems, we provide closed-cell SilverGlo™ Crawl Space Insulation on the walls and TerraBlock™ Insulation™ for the floors.

SilverGlo™ Crawl Space Insulation has been designed to be completely inorganic, with a closed-cell design that will never support the growth of mold or rot.

This advanced insulation is made of graphite-impregnated expanded polystyrene foam, which is 24% more efficient at insulation than standard foam insulation.

Its silver appearance also serves as a radiant heat barrier, reflecting back even more heat into your home, providing an industry-leading R-11 insulation rating.

Insulating Your Crawl Space Floor

While the most money is saved by insulating the crawl space walls, it's also a great idea to insulate the floor of the crawl space as well.

Craw spaces are located underground, where the earth maintains a year-round temperature of about 55°F. Insulating the floor will prevent heat loss through this broad surface and prevent your home from having to work that much harder to condition the air in your home.

Basement Systems dealers prefer TerraBlock™ Crawl Space Floor Insulation for this kind of application. Created with a durable ¾" layer of closed-cell foam insulation, it's padded, puncture-resistant, and ideal for crawl-on access by homeowners and service workers alike.

TerraBlock™ is compatible with our full line of crawl space products, including our sump pumps, drainage matting, and crawl space vapor barrier. When combined with SilverGlo™ on your crawl space walls, it's a fantastic way to maximize your money savings for an energy efficient home!
