Keep Your Basement Dry!

A basement represents a huge amount of space in your home -- an entire floor's worth! When a basement is allowed to flood or grow mold, that valuable space is wasted.

Even if your basement is free of flooding, it won't be usable for storage or living space if it's damp, musty, and filled with mold. So the key to a quality foundation waterproofing project is to waterproof the space and keep it free of humidity.

Turn Your Basement Into Dry, Usable Space

To be able to use your basement, you're going to need to count on it to be dry -- and to stay dry. If the space can't be relied on to stay dry, you probably won't feel comfortable investing in finishing your basement, storing your valuables there, or making personal use of the space.

If your basement is flooding or damp, it's time to reclaim that space! At Basement Systems, we recommend you take the following steps to reclaim your basement -- permanently!

A sump pump system for a dry basement

Waterproofing The Basement

If your basement is flooding, you have a serious problem! A wet basement will lower the value of your home by 10% or more, while the flooded water damages your walls, floors, and stored items. As mold begins to grow, it will create an unhealthy environment in your home.

Installing a sump pump system at the low spot in your basement, with a drainage system along the perimeter walls will intercept groundwater before it enters your home.

We recommend waterproofing the basement from the interior rather than the exterior. Basement Systems Dealers have successfully installed interior systems in hundreds of thousands of homes in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom over the past 20 years.

We've found them to be faster to install, much less expensive, and more successful than exterior waterproofing systems. We also appreciate that there's no need to excavate the exterior of the home, which is damaging to landscaping and your yard. Finally, an interior system can be readily and easily serviced should there be any issue.

Installing A Backup Pump Pump System

A sump pump system will stop working if you have one pump, and that pump stops working.

Sump pumps can sometimes clog, and like other mechanical utilities in your home, they'll eventually wear out. Additionally, a blown fuse, power outage, or accidental unplugging of a sump pump will stop its operation. Sooner or later, a single sump pump will fail. When it does, you're most likely going to find out only when your basement floods.

A battery backup sump pump is your best line of defense against flooding due to sump pump failure. Our UltraSump® Battery Backup Sump Pump can pump out more than 11,500 gallons of water on a fully charged battery -- enough water to fill a small swimming pool!

Additionally, our system includes an alarm system, which will sound off to notify you that it's running. Our alarm can even be hooked into your home security system so you can be notified by a call on your cell phone!

Adding Waterproof Wall Paneling

With a sump pump system installed, you can count on a basement free of flooding. However, the space will still be damp, due to moisture entering the basement through the porous concrete walls and floor.

As moisture passes through the basement walls, it will add to the humidity level of the basement, encouraging mold growth and giving the space that musty smell that basements are notorious for having.

At Basement Systems, we have a wide variety of basement wall panelings available that can upgrade your basement walls. Our systems can be used on walls of all types, including block walls, stone walls, and uneven or "wavy" basement walls.

Our panels include options that are insulated, include a radiant heat barrier, and give the basement a finished look. Our panels are designed to be appropriate for basements with moisture problems, and are compatible with our waterproofing systems.

Installing Waterproof Flooring

Installing waterproof basement flooring will do more than simply keep humidity from rising upwards from the concrete slab -- it will also create a warmer, more attractive surface underfoot.

Basement flooring can be installed that will create a thermal break on the basement floor, separating you from the cold concrete below. And instead of an ugly, stained flooring, you can enjoy an attractive surface underfoot.

We have nine different options for your basement floor -- including the waterproof sub floor pictured above, our tiled and carpeted floorings, our parquet flooring, and our attractive faux-wood flooring panels. All of these floors can be quickly installed in your basement for a more beautiful and valuable space.

Dehumidify The Space

A great way to finish off your basement space is to install an energy efficient, self-draining basement dehumidifier. This is a great, low-maintenance way to ensure that your space is being kept dry, healthy, and ready for use and storage.

Most dehumidifiers available at hardware stores these days aren't strong enough to truly dry a basement space -- their blowing motors can't circulate the air, and they're too weak to remove enough moisture to dry your home.

Our SaniDry™ XP dehumidifier is rated to dry up to 2,500 square feet at three times the efficiency of hardware store models. It can remove up to 110 pints of water per day, and it's powerful blowing motor is strong enough to be ducted from a closet into a finished basement.

Additionally, a MerV-11 air filter comes standard, removing mold spores and particles from the air as small as 2 microns. An advanced digital interface and self-draining design will allow you to "set it and forget it"!
