Problems With Sump Pump Noise

Several sump pumps in a sump pit with too many pipes running at ninety degree angles.

Sump pumps are mechanical systems that make noise when they run. Noise-reducing components are an important part of a proper system design.

At Basement Systems, one of the common types of sump pump problems we've heard about from homeowners have to do with sump pump noise.

How noisy a sump pump system is relies on many factors, including:

  • The design of the pump
  • The pump location in relation to the sump pit
  • What the sump pump is made of
  • The lubrication of the parts
  • Whether the sump pit is airtight

At Basement Systems, we've taken all these factors into consideration when we designed our award-winning systems. We're proud to say that our sump pump systems are the quietest, smoothest-running systems in the industry.

Pedestal sump pumps are not submersible in water, and must extend out of the sump pit to run properly. This makes them the loudest model of sump pump on the market.

What Makes A Sump Pump Noisy?

How loud your sump pump is can make the difference between a system that is nice and quiet, and one that will will wake you up in the middle of the night when it runs.

Let's take a look at some things that make a sump system noisy:

The Pump Extends Out Of The Sump Pit: This is the #1 cause for sump pump noise. A good sump pump system should be placed inside of the sump pit, where the noise is literally kept underground and as far away from you as possible. Otherwise, all that noise is echoing directly into your basement.

The Sump Pit Is Not Covered: Sump pits are the sources of gurgling water noises and the mechanical sounds of your sump pump operating. Covering the pit with an airtight lid is an effective way to hold back this noise and keep it out of your house.

When choosing a sump pump, the quietest and longest-lasting systems will be designed with a cast-iron design throughout -- not just at the bottom and top. This will also help to protect the system from overheating, resulting in a longer life for your system.

Vibrations Of The Discharge Pipe: As water flows through the discharge line, it can cause the pipe to vibrate and rattle against the sump pump lid and fixtures in the home.

This can be avoided by installing rubber grommets in the gaps between the discharge pipe and the liner lid. The grommets will further seal the sump lid while also absorbing those vibrations to keep the discharge line still.

Poor Sump Pump Design: Your sump pump system should be made from cast-iron, and self-lubricated to keep down friction during normal operation. Avoid cheap plastic designs, as these can easily overheat and break down.

Poorly Designed Discharge Lines: Your discharge line should be straight as possible -- water traveling at 90 ° angles down a pipe makes a lot of noise as it moves. Whenever possible, use two 45 ° angles instead.
